My jewellery is inspired by the natural world. The maritime in particular has a strong influence on the concept of my designs, but psychologically and emotionally it is the ancient world of talismanic potency that inhabits the finished pieces.
I view jewellery as a magical element in life, and as an enduring energy reaching beyond this life, as did people of the ancient world.
Teaching students one-to-one at my workshop and producing commissioned pieces forms the majority of my work, whilst I continue to record countless design ideas within the pages of my sketchbooks. The undulating linear decorations used in many of my designs are inspired by the childhood experience of living beside a small river in rural Suffolk, and the familiar sight of shallow water rippling over pebbles in sunlight.
Design is the pivotal dictate of my work. Sketchbooks are used to ‘think on paper’ and designs developed to a stage whereby a prototype is often made. Landscape contributes to my vision through an awareness of land mass balanced against sky, the perspective of diminishing rural roads and the sculptural statement of trees.
My first collections of silver jewellery were produced in 1977 initially selling at Liberty & Co., and Harvey Nicholls, London. Periodic exhibitions followed at galleries across the UK whilst I developed an extensive range of made to order pieces.
My formal training in the arts began in 1962 at Mansfield College of Art and Design, Nottinghamshire and in 1964-67 I studied for a BA in 3 dimensional design at Loughborough College of Art, Leicestershire where I was first introduced to precious metal as an art form. In 1967 I went on to study for an MA at the Royal College of Art, London, specialising in silversmithing and after graduating in 1970 spent some years teaching in London. I now live and work in the Vale of Clwyd, North Wales surrounded by rural beauty and with expansive views of the hills.
